Welp, it’s official. On March 14th, 2014, in the legendary Turners Hall in Cleveland, Ohio, I will be venturing yet again into the world of Absolute Intense Wrestling with their latest event, Gauntlet for the Gold 9. Ever since I heard about Absolution XIII last year, I began to really start paying attention to AIW, a wrestling promotion that, even though are in my backyard, I never really focused on until now. My first event was December’s “Dead Presidents, which was also the 2nd independent wrestling event I went to in my life. The show was un-freaking-believable, the crowd was hot, I got to meet some of my favorite wrestlers in the Indys, and saw Tim “Fucking” Donst and Chris Hero beat the ever loving shit out of each other. Sadly, due to monetary issues, I was not able to go to #TGIF last month, but hopefully with this trip, I’ll be able to make it up because the main event of GftG9 is the titular Gauntlet, a 30-man all out brawl for a shot to face the AIW Absolute Champion at Absolution IX. This’ll be my first GftG so I’m pretty hyped to see what will happen. But that’s not the only awesome match on the card. Here’s a preview of the card (as of February 26th, 2014) so that hopefully I can convince people to stop whatever they are doing and fly down to Cleveland to see some of the most awesome professional wrestling on the planet.
Match #1: Bobby Beverly vs. #AllEGO
I’ll admit, I am not too familiar with the whole #AllEGO story line going on, except that it’ll probably be Ethan Page who’ll wrestle (Keep in mind, I just started paying attention at the tail end of last year, so forgive me if I miss anything). Beverly is a face I used to see when Sports Time Ohio used to air Pro Wrestling Ohio before it’s abrupt cancellation. From what I have seen of Beverly, he’s a pretty damn fine worker. Very athletic, agile, and while not having a great look, more than makes up for it with his sheer skill. If the odds are that Page will be the one wrestling, I’ll take this time to talk about “Mr. All Ego”, who is by far one of the better heels in wrestling right now, in that you legitimately want to see someone kick his shit eating grin off of his face. As for his in-ring skill, again, pretty damn good. His match with Michael Elgin at Dead Presidents really showed the promise this guy has what it takes to be a main event level talent. Not really one of the matches I am looking forward to the most, but I expect a fine match nonetheless.
Match #2: Dicks and Flips (Ty Colton & Flip Kendrick) Vs. Youthenazia (Josh Prohibition & “M-Dogg 20” Matt Cross)
“Penis Pants” Colton and Kendrick have already established themselves as the freshest spot monkeys in AIW, with flips, jumps, rotations and everything in between. Youthenazia, who essentially invented Cleveland spot-fest tag wrestling, are pretty damn awesome, and I’m not saying that just because Cross was in Wrestling Society X. All I have to say about this match is expect it to be a spot fest.
Match #3: Louis Lyndon vs. ACH
Lyndon is another guy like Page who is so good at playing a heel because, like Page, I’d pay to see him in pain. ACH is a young future star who I’m familiar with because of his excellent series of matches with “Mr. Touchdown” Mark Angelosetti in CHIKARA. Another match that I expect to quite a few high spots in, but end with Lyndon ultimately retaining due to interference or no good chicanery.
Match #4: The Jollyville Fuck-Its( “Nasty” Russ Myers & T-Money) vs The Batiri (Kodama and Obaryion)
The Jollyville Fuck-Its have pretty much been the kings of the AIW Tag Division for quite a while now. They have the crowd behind them, they have the belts, they have the skills, and they have that one move where they just shoulder block a guy but it looks so painful you think the guy had his shoulder shattered. The Batiri have become sort of an internet darling for me. I have seen them live at the CHIKARA show I went to in 2012 (A Piece of the Action) and since then, followed them on any sort of social media because the Batiri have the greatest Facebook pages and Twitter account on the planet. This is the match I’m looking forward to the second most.
Match #5: Marion Fontaine vs. Tracy Smothers
Tracy Smothers is an old-school southern racist. Marion Fontaine is an old-fashion 1920’s gentlemanly brawler. I expect this match to make me laugh my ass off no more than 6 times.
Match #6: Tim “Fucking” Donst vs. Eddie Kingston
This is the match that sold the show for me. Tim “Fucking” Donst, to me, is “Wrestling’s Biggest Fucking Beast”. Intensity, skill, power, ruthless aggression, and an undying will. Every Indy show I have been to (2, but still counts), he’s been on the card and he has never let me down. Hell, he wrestled with 2 concussions and a 100 degree plus fever. That takes dedication. Kingston is a guy who is just brawler incarnate; brute strength, deadly punches, and some of the stiffest backfists I have seen in any shape or form. These two are going to fight to the death, I just know it. Even Donst said that on March 14th, Eddie Kingston “is going to die”.
Match #7: “Unbreakable” Michael Elgin vs. Andrew Everett
You may know Everett formally as the Chiva Kid from Pro Wrestling EVO, CWF, and CZW, known for his Double Moonsault. Elgin, a household powerhouse in ROH, won the title at Dead Presidents and has defended it against Drake Younger at #TGIF. I still expect a more than decent match.
Match 8: 30-man Gauntlet for the Gold
Think a Royal Rumble, but no over-the-top-rope and all eliminations are done by pinfall or submission. It’s going to be chaotic, insanely fun, and probably an hour long. I look forward to every second.
